‘Ace’ comes from the Latin ‘as’ meaning ‘a unit’ and was the name of a small Roman coin. It used to be the name for the side of a die with only one pip, and since rolling low was bad, it was a name for bad luck. However, since it was incorporated into playing cards, it is now regarded as the highest card in the deck; seen as something valuable and of high quality.
